The Tag Editor uses Unicode/UTF-8 format for text tags in all metadata formats, except ID3v2.3, which by design can hold metadata in UTF-16 encoding only. So if your player can parse ID3v2 tags but does not recognize international characters in UTF-8, perhaps ID3v2.3 can be the right choice in this case.
